Record Low Interest Rates for 30 Year Mortgages
Somewhere, mixed in with those gripped by fear and uncertainty or who are simply unable to buy, are people are still making job changes, relocating or just moving up. In short, people are still buying houses because they have to. So this is really good news. From the Wall Street Journal: The 30-year mortgage averaged 4.85% in the week ended March 26, the lowest point since Freddie Mac's weekly survey began in 1971.[snip] To obtain the rates, the fixed-rate mortgages as well as the five-year ARM required payment of an average 0.7 point. The one-year ARM required payment of an average 0.6 point. A point is 1% of the mortgage amount, charged as prepaid interest. It may be the right time for you...or it may NOT. Find out if you qualify first, then decide to move forward. Labels: Interest Rates, Mortgages, News, Real Estate

Another Irish Bar in Downtown Boise?
The Idaho Business Review is reporting that Bad Irish will be filling the vacancy left by a litany of failed restaurants at the corner of 8th and Idaho Streets. Hoping to cater to the 30's crowd, the bar's focus will be on live music. They will not serve food. For a good discussion about whether or not we need another Irish-themed bar in Boise and if, using its current business model, it will fly, read the comments section. No one wants another business to fail, and I think we all want to see that fabulous old building getting some good use. If I were the owners, I would carefully read those comments.

Boise's Linen District to Launch "Sunday Market" in April
Great news for the local economy, downtown Boise and shoppers anxious to buy local. From the Linen District's March "Thread" Newsletter:The Linen Building is getting ready to launch another component of the business plan by opening its doors to the public on every 3rd Sunday of the month for a new type of shopping experience. Sunday Market at the Linen Building will feature up to 28 local vendors offering everything from fresh flowers, foods and wines to arts, crafts, clothing and house wares, all in a climate controlled marketplace setting. “I’m very excited to be able to offer this type of retail environment to not only the public, but more so to our vendors.” Building owner David Hale said. “There’s very little overhead or start up costs for the business owners. They get to come in, set up shop and sell their goods. At the end of the day, they pack up and leave.” [snip] The Sunday Market at the Linen Building will launch on April 19th and run each 3rd Sunday for the rest of the year from 10 am to 3pm. A portion of the total vendor proceeds will be donated to a local nonprofit of choice. “I want to offer something I hope the community will respond to, while at the same time, give back to those in need.” Labels: Community Events, Downtown Boise, Neighborhoods, News

Boise: "Downsizing Your Life?"
Calling them an "appealing alternative to life in the big city," MSNBC is highlighting a BizJournals list of the Top Ten Mid-Sized Metropolitan Areas. Boise makes the list. "Boise is one of the fastest-growing places in America, adding 123,000 people since 2000, a growth rate of 26.4 percent. The typical midsize metro grew 8.4 percent over the same span."BizJournals (link here) names Boise's strengths as: 1. Strong population growth 2. Solid corps of young adults 3. Nice selection of new houses 4. Healthy entrepreneurial spirit 5. Relatively low unemployment rate "The highest scores went to well-rounded places with healthy economies, light traffic, moderate costs of living, impressive housing stocks and strong educational systems."While these things are mostly true (though unemployment is up slightly), the data BizJournals based their study on is from 2007, and things have changed. The timing for this article, given the state of the economy, seems poor. Also, we would question the wisdom of moving to one of these "mid-sized metro areas" to downsize your life. You'll be as busy as you want to be wherever you live. And as for "light traffic," everything is relative! Labels: Boise, Economy, Growth, Idaho, News

Where Were You in 1995?
Just for fun, consider where you were in 1995, the year Yahoo! was launched. From the article... Bill Clinton is president. Jerry Garcia is still singing. Toy Story is leading at the box office. Everyone is reading “Angela’s Ashes.” The O.J. Simpson trial is pre-empting soap operas. “Java” is still a cup of coffee. Kevin Mitnick has just been arrested for hacking. The Dow Jones has closed above 4,000 for the first time. Pamela Anderson wed Tommy Lee in a white bikini. Will Ferrell is about to become a household name. Email is something for computer science geeks. A snapshot of their first homepage: Labels: Random

Sorry to Be Out of Touch
February was a busy month for us. Not only have we been fortunate enough to help a number of clients list and sell their homes, our marketing director had her first baby. We're back on track and looking forward to plenty of blogging.
