Avoiding Scams on CraigsList

Fox 12 News is reporting a new take on a (relatively) old scam.
For one local apartment manager getting flooded with calls about her vacancy, it turned out to be a bad thing.

[snip]

It started, innocently, when a legitimate advertisement about the property was posted on Craig's List. Things went wrong when con artists copied the ad, sweetened the deal and dropped the price. Asking would-be renters to wire them a cash deposit in Nigeria.

"And it looks like one of them was about to send money to these people in Africa," said Roth.

While Roth doesn't want her apartment complex named, she says while clearing up the mess, she got copies of what the scammers sent out from a mother who barely stopped her 18-year-old daughter from sending the con artists money through Western Union.
We've all heard about the "wire money to Nigeria scam" that even smart consumers have occasionally fallen prey to. Copying ads and redirecting readers is a new low.

The most common attempt aimed at scamming me is replying to our CraigsList listing ads. Here's a recent example:

I am interested in buying this house. What are the extra costs like taxes, heating, electric, insurance? Does house need any repairs? Can it be bought with any furnishings? Is it possible to rent with option to buy? Do you have any pictures of the house interior and exterior that you can send with an E-mail?

Let me know. Thanks!

Regards,
The Scammer with Nothing Better to do With My Life

Our real estate listings always include photos and links to our website, which would answer the question of furnishings and, oh, pictures of the interior and exterior!

Usually the questions are worse, and sometimes the emails are more detailed. "I'm moving from London and my agent in Boise will be handling everything."

Ignore these emails. They're a waste of your time. If you have a serious buyer on your hands they won't ask for photos when there is a link to see the house from 50 different angles, and they won't ask about repairs.

Have any of you real estate marketing gurus had similar experiences?

Reader Contribution: Idaho developer markets “man caves” for auto hobbyists

This is interesting.

We got an email from a reader, Martin Johncox, who represents Steelwood Enterprise Center. Steelwood is developing "man-caves," which are being offered at Larkspur subdivision in Meridian.

Below are just snippets from the press release Mr. Johncox sent us Click here to watch a newsclip from Channel 6 about it.

Call it the modern equivalent of the 10-year-old-boys’ clubhouse: an 1,800-square-foot room set up to work on a couple of classic cars, with space for sofas, a big-screen TV, a bar, a poker table and a pool table.

The developer of the Steelwood Enterprise Center and the Larkspur subdivision says there’s a market for that kind of space in residential and commercial settings.

“We’ve done some research and found there are a lot of classic car hobbyists who keep their projects in rented storage units, but those usually don’t have heat, air conditioning or electricity for working on a car,” said Ron Sargent.

[snip]

Ground central for the man cave in Idaho is the Steelwood Enterprise Center in Boise. It’s a 62,000-square-foot owner-occupied complex with a wide variety of local businesses, including a number of construction and development industry businesses.

[snip]

“Men have always wanted someplace to where they can retreat and Steelwood represents the evolution of the man cave,” Sargent said.

Leroy Custer always loved tinkering on cars, but as a busy executive with BMC West, he had little time. He retired in May and promptly purchased a space at Steelwood, where he keeps a 1968 Corvette, a 1958 Pontiac Chieftain, a 1967 Camaro and a 1928 gas pump he’s restoring. Memorabilia from his 39 years at BMC adorn the walls – golf clubs, photos, a company map signed by employees in all the states where BMC is active. A kitchenette and a desk with high-speed Internet (useful in seeking restoration advice and replacement parts) round out the space.

“Over time, it’s going to involve into more of a social space because with car restoration, you might ask people to come over and help you with something where they have expertise,” Custer said. “I think this space gives me the opportunity to develop new friendships. I even held a retirement party here and fed 60 people.”

[snip]

A 1,440-square-foot shell comes with sheetrocked walls, heating, air conditioning, bathroom, mop sink and drinking fountain and sells for about $150,000, or around $100 per square foot. While that might seem like a lot for a recreational space, most car restoration hobbyists sell their work, or work for pay, so their hobby earns some money. The alternative is to take up space in their garage, or rent space at a storage unit that isn’t set up for restoration work. Then, of course, there’s the recreational and social aspect. Sargent pointed out the units are also an investment, as their value will increase over time and occupants aren’t throwing money away on rent.
